Surfing in Portugal
Did you know that the most fascinating and biggest waves are not found off the coasts of Hawaii, Florida or California, but on the coasts of Portugal? Well, one never stops learning. In fact, gigantic waves attract enthusiastic surfers and many more fascinated onlookers. Where is it exactly? In Nazare. Ever heard? No? Then it's time for a little digression about Portugal.
Portugal
It is the westernmost country in the EU. Also one of the smaller ones. It borders the Atlantic and Spain, is around 92,000 square kilometers in size and is home to a good 10 million Portuguese. Around 2 million other Portuguese live abroad, for example in the USA, in France or in Brazil. The capital is Lisbon. The climate is Mediterranean. The west in particular is characterized by a fascinating coastal landscape. Even if it seems obvious - most tourists don't come here to swim in the sea, but to surf. Because Portugal offers some incredible surf spots that attract tourists from all over the world.
Ericeira
Anyone who has nothing to do with surfing will not know what to do with it. But in fact, Ericeira is the world's third and Europe's first surf reserve. Waves of all sizes can be found here. Ericeira is relatively easy to reach.
The seaside resort of Figueira da Foz
This stretch of coast has something to offer that is rarely found. Any surfer of any ability can choose their own wave height. The beginner will find sections with small and moderate waves, but also the advanced and the professional will not miss out. Surfing lessons are offered here and there on the beach. If you want to come here, you need a car or a camper.
Nazaré – the superlative
You think waves taller than most houses only exist in movies? Or if they exist, are they unsurfable? Not even close. The official world record for the highest surfed wave is 24 meters. Placed where? On the beach of Nazare. And that's not the end of the road. Even 30 m high waves are said to have been conquered several times. However, there is no official evidence for this.
The ideal arrival
If you want to visit and experience the best spots, you have to be mobile. The goals are not exactly close together. And it pays to be ready to jump almost anytime. Because depending on the wind, large waves can build up here or there. Then you have to be fast. A mobile home is ideal. This gives you flexibility and you always have everything you need with you. The best part is that you can also travel pretty cheap with it.
