Greece – azure blue sea, white beaches, charming villages, and the Acropolis

Greece, also called the Hellenic Republic, is a country in southeastern Europe, bordering Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Greece has a total area of 131,957 km², of which 106,915 km² is mainland and 25,042 km² is spread over 3,054 islands. Most of the islands are located in the Mediterranean, in the Aegean Sea. Greece’s coastline measures almost 14,000 kilometers: 4,000 kilometers are on the mainland, and the rest are made up by the countless islands. About 10.4 million people live in Greece. It is one of the most rapidly aging populations in the EU, with an average age of 46.9 years – in Switzerland, it’s about 43 years. The Greek language is, after Sanskrit and Tamil, one of the oldest actively spoken languages in the world.

Athens

The capital of Greece is named after the goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war. Athens is the most important metropolis in Greece and the perfect starting point for an unforgettable campervan journey. One of its most famous landmarks is the Acropolis, an ancient complex overlooking the city, which houses the Temple of Athena. Also located in Athens is the Olympieion, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, one of the largest temples of ancient Greece. How about a visit to Varvakios Central Market? This market is known for fresh vegetables, fruits, wine, fish, and meat. In its vibrant atmosphere, you can sample and buy authentic Greek delicacies. Two interesting old town districts are Plaka and Anafiotika, both offering a typical Greek look with colorful houses and cozy alleys full of bars, restaurants, and street cafés.

Peloponnese

For motorhome trips, there are several routes from Athens to explore the mainland or the islands. One option is to travel via the Corinth Canal bridge to the Peloponnese peninsula. It is perfect for a round trip with a motorhome. Away from the big tourist crowds, you’ll find peace, stunning coastal landscapes, and great scenic variety. The west coast features long sandy beaches, while the east coast impresses with rocky areas and small bays. Peloponnese is known for untouched landscapes—from waterfalls and shimmering lakes to snow-covered mountains, rugged gorges, and vineyards. Ancient Olympia is the most important site on the Peloponnese and the place where the first Olympic Games were held. How about Voidokilia Beach? It’s one of the most beautiful in all of Greece, located on the west side near Pylos. Or visit the Diros Caves on the southern slopes of Mount Dirfys, offering a breathtaking underground network of chambers, tunnels, a crystal-clear river, and hanging stalactites.

Thessaloniki

The Greek port city of Thessaloniki lies in the north on the Thermaic Gulf in the Aegean Sea and, with around 326,000 inhabitants, is the second-largest city in Greece after Athens. The seafront promenade is one of the most beautiful spots in the city, stretching 5 kilometers from the harbor warehouses to the “White Tower,” the city’s landmark. For a real beach vibe, Chalkidiki is the perfect destination, with its beautiful white sand beaches, high waves, and crystal-clear water. Besides its stunning beaches, Chalkidiki also offers many sights, such as ancient Stagira, the birthplace of the famous philosopher Aristotle.
