Southern France, often referred to by locals as “Le Midi”, is far more than just a geographical term. It stands for light, openness, and an exceptional quality of life. The region covers a considerable area, with Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur alone spanning more than 31,000 km². Southern France stretches from the snow-capped peaks of the Maritime Alps across the fine sandy beaches of the Riviera to the wild wetlands of the Camargue, offering a remarkable diversity of landscapes that is ideal for discovery tours by motorhome. The climate is without doubt the defining feature of the region. Southern France enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine per year and is therefore considered one of the sunniest regions in Europe. Summers are characterised by high temperatures and dry conditions, accompanied by the distinctive chirping of cicadas. In contrast, winters are pleasantly mild, making the region particularly attractive for campers looking to escape the gloomy northern climate.
More than five million people live in the region, whose identity is as diverse as its landscapes. While coastal cities such as Marseille are regarded as multicultural melting pots with a vibrant, modern energy, the inhabitants of the hinterland preserve a distinct and proud sense of calm. You encounter a mix of tradition-minded farmers, passionate artisans, and people who approach life creatively. This blend creates a warm hospitality where sharing time around a long table matters more than hustle and bustle – a spirit that welcomes motorhome travellers with open arms.
The film city of Cannes is an ideal starting point for your motorhome journey, as you can collect your rental vehicle directly there. Before leaving the city behind, take a stroll along the legendary Croisette, admire the handprints of the stars at the Palais des Festivals, and enjoy the breathtaking view over the bay from the charming old quarter of Le Suquet. Once you take the wheel, the route leads inland to the perfume town of Grasse and continues along the historic Route Napoléon. It winds impressively through the pre-Alps and takes you straight to the natural wonder of the Gorges du Verdon. After circling the deep gorges and stopping at the turquoise Lac de Sainte-Croix, the return journey leads through the glowing lavender fields of the Plateau de Valensole back to the coast.
An ideal starting point for explorers is the lively port city of Marseille, from where you can head west into untamed nature with your camper. Before setting off, a visit to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde is recommended, offering a unique panoramic view over the Mediterranean. After enjoying fresh fish or an authentic bouillabaisse at the historic Vieux Port, the route stretches around 300 kilometres into the fascinating Camargue nature reserve. This region is a world of its own: vast salt flats where pink flamingos roam, and endless pastures grazed by the famous white Camargue horses and black bulls. A special highlight for motorhome travellers is the coastal town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, known for its pilgrimages and proximity to the sea. On the return journey, you have the opportunity to visit the city of Arles with its remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre and immerse yourself in antiquity. The crowning finale is the medieval rock village of Les Baux-de-Provence, majestically perched above the Alpilles, offering sweeping views over the olive groves of Provence.
Start in the city of the popes, Avignon, and immerse yourself in classic postcard France. This route winds through the Luberon Regional Nature Park and leads to some of the “most beautiful villages in France”, including Gordes and Roussillon, famed for its intensely red ochre cliffs. Along the way, vineyards and small weekly markets line the route – perfect for stocking up the camper with delicious regional specialties. The crowning highlight is the view of the majestic Mont Ventoux.
