Estonia - Discover the Baltic States
The north Baltic country of Estonia gained its independence as a state in 1991 and is a member of the United Nations, the EU, NATO, the OECD, the euro zone and the OSCE. These facts alone suggest that the time of the Russian occupation is a thing of the past. Today, Estonia is a western-oriented country with a strong economy and links to Finland, Germany and Latvia. The standard of living is accordingly good and continues to rise rapidly.
Estonia is not that big. Around 1.3 million people live here on an area of 45,340 square kilometers - the country is therefore as small / large as Switzerland. The capital is Tallinn (430,000 inhabitants), the second largest city is Tartu (around 100,000 inhabitants). The country has an extraordinary number of lakes, moors and extensive forests, around 3,800 km of coastline (Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland) and is an interesting holiday destination, especially for nature lovers.
The climate is cool and temperate, which means that the summers are moderately warm and the winters are quite cold, although the coasts are mostly free of ice. The country is not particularly mountainous, but rather hilly with the highest peaks that reach almost 300 meters. The huge forests (around half of the country is covered by forest) mostly consist of birch, Scots pine, spruce and fir and are home to many large mammal species such as elk, red deer, roe deer or brown bears, lynxes, wolves and wild boars. The nature lover who likes to watch animals in the wild will get their money's worth with luck.
There is one mode of transport for a holiday in Estonia that is probably more suitable than any other - provided you are not planning a purely city break and you want to explore the unspoiled countryside: the motorhome. Schedule at least two weeks, or better three, take your time and switch off. Leave the job at home and escape to the Estonian nature. With the motorhome you are independent and free. The way to travel is convenient and cheap. Starting from Tallinn or Tartu, incomparably beautiful tours are possible, which will take you to the coast and inland. You will not regret it!
