A road trip through Canada with a motorhome
With 9,985,000 km², Canada is the second largest country in the world, after Russia. It is located in the north of America above the United States and borders the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The Canadian coastline measures 243,000 kilometers, making it the world record-holder. Almost 40 million people live in Canada, most of them along the border with the USA. The largest city in the country is Toronto, followed by Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary. The capital of Canada is Ottawa in Ontario.
Vancouver
If you are planning to travel to the west of Canada, the best place to start is Vancouver. Although the metropolis of Vancouver is huge, it is located in the middle of incredible wilderness and amazing natural sights, including some of the most pristine national parks in the world such as Courtenay National Park, Glacier National Park of Canada and Pacific Rim National Park. Another highlight is the Harbour Centre Tower observation point in Vancouver. This 550-foot-high glass tower offers a 360-degree view of the entire Vancouver region, including English Bay. On the "Sea to Sky Highway" from Vancouver to Lillooet, the route literally leads from the Pacific to the mountains and offers breathtaking natural landscapes far away from the mainstream.
Toronto or Montreal
Toronto or Montreal are ideal for a motorhome tour of Eastern Canada. Niagara Falls are on the border between the USA and Canada and can be reached from Toronto in about 180 kilometers. Algonquin Provincial Park offers rocky mountain ridges, maple hills and thousands of lakes: 7,725 km² of forests, moors, lakes and rivers. Numerous campsites are available here. Montreal is the second largest city in Canada after Toronto and the second largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris. Montreal is named after the mountain Mont Royal. The city is surrounded by the St. Lawrence River and the estuaries of the Ottawa, making it the largest island in the Hochelaga Archipelago. The Notre-Dame Basilica, the symbol of Montreal, has a spectacular interior decorated with ornate wooden columns and carvings, all made entirely by hand. Gilded stars shine from the vaulted ceilings and the stained glass windows tell the story of Montreal.
Halifax
Halifax is the ideal starting point for an exploration tour of the Atlantic provinces. The port city is located in eastern Canada and is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia. The port of Halifax is one of the largest ports in North America after Vancouver. Nova Scotia's best weather region is the Green Annapolis Valley. The beauty of the Atlantic provinces consists of a series of peninsulas and islands. Lonely sandy beaches alternate with lush farmland. Rugged bays follow fishing villages, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. You could continue with the North Shore drive from Halifax to Amherst–Canso Causeway. The route winds through idyllic landscapes and leads to long stretches of beach, which are washed by the Northumberland Strait.
Pure wilderness with bison, bears, moose & Co.
One of the most impressive animal representatives in Canada is the majestic moose, which roams the forests with its impressive antlers. It is quite possible that you will be able to observe "this king of the forests" during a motorhome trip. The grizzly bear, the symbol of strength and wilderness, can also be found in the remote areas in the Rocky Mountains and the coastal areas. Polar bears in Canada are mainly seen in the subarctic and arctic regions, on the arctic islands of Nunavut and along the coasts of Hudson Bay. There is a large polar bear population in Churchill in the province of Manitoba, for example. There are two species of bison in Canada: the wood bison and its smaller brother, the plains bison of the prairie. They are the largest land mammals in the region.
