The Expanses of Russia

If you ask people what they know about Russia, they usually get answers like “big country”, “Putin”, “vodka”, “Siberia”. It's just the typical associations that each of us has in our heads. Russia is also something completely different - a highly interesting travel destination. But first a few general facts. Because Russia is a country of superlatives. It measures 17 million square kilometers, but at the same time is home to “only” around 145 million inhabitants. If you average that out, you get 8 inhabitants per square kilometer. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland we are around 100 per square kilometer – just for comparison. They speak Russian and pay in rubles. You already know the not always uncontroversial president. The capital Moscow is not only known for the imposing Kremlin, but also because it is the largest city in the country. Around 12 million people live in this gigantic metropolis. This makes the remote areas appear even more deserted. The question is, where do you go when driving / flying to Russia? You'll have to narrow yourself down a bit. Traveling through everything is probably not possible in a whole year.

Plane? Automobile? Hotel? Or camper?

It depends a bit on what you want to see. Who takes a pure city vacation to Moscow or St. Petersburg, needs a well located hotel, maybe a rental car and thus has taken care of. If you want to get to know the country and its people, you have to do a little more. A mobile home is the first choice for this. If you know the travel dates and land in Moscow, you can reserve a mobile home in the desired size with the desired equipment in advance so that it is ready at the airport. Then all you have to do is get your luggage, clear customs and pick up the vehicle.

A suggested route

Attention - a note in advance. A tourist visa is required for Russia. Take care of it early on. Then there will be no problems later. It is valid for 90 days. And you should find out about the current corona situation early enough and, of course, ideally be fully vaccinated. Then you have the least problems. A beautiful route, for example, leads along the Trans-Siberian Highway. It leads from Moscow via Samara, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Chita to Vladivostok. Just like the Trans-Siberian Railway, which runs from west to east, only you can plan the stops yourself and spend time here and there. Because the route is very long at 9,000 km, we do not want to give any recommendations on how much time you should bring with you. Best is just as much as you have. Anyone who thinks they can do it in 2 weeks will have to stress themselves out quite a bit. 4 weeks is definitely better. There is much to admire and discover. Just let yourself drift. And if 9,000 km seems too much, you can also drive a section, for example from Moscow to Novosibirsk and back. With the mobile home you are not tied to hotels. You are flexible like never before.
